LITERACY VOLUNTEERS I am able to think and see more clearly. I can do a lot more for myself. I’m becoming more focused at work, it seems to improve my concentration . . . I’m a chef, and things can get hectic, I come off more professional, smoother, less jumpy. I’m more confident in the things I do, like going out and reading menus, picking up magazines. I’m not scared about it anymore. I never expected I could do what I can. It’s like a new life. A new beginning. I see changes in attitude. I tend to venture out to new places and be with new people. I know that it has changed me a lot and I believe that it will continue to change me because life is change. Learning to read was like breaking out of jail. When I came into the program I could not read a note of anything. Today it’s a new way of life.   S t u d e n t    Q u o t e s OF MASSACHUSETTS

I was afraid. But now I have more confidence in myself and if I make a mistake, yeah I know I made a mistake and I can go on. It’s such a chance to connect with someone striving for a critical goal. It’s a great opportunity to learn about what’s most important in life. It’s a great program. The training was comprehensive and top notch. I enjoyed being able to help and share my skills with someone. It has taught me how hard it is to survive in this city without being literate. The one-on-one has taught me how to be patient and see learning as a process.   V o l u n t e e r    Q u o t e s
It’s been terrific for me. I’ve had three students and felt I learned something from each as they improved reading and work skills. Being able to nurture and share such a valuable skill with students who are so grateful for the help is just terribly gratifying.
