Basic literacy or ESOL tutor

You can help an adult in your community gain the empowering literacy skills needed to achieve educational, work and personal goals by becoming a trained Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts tutor.

You would provide 2 hours per week of free, private, individualized and confidential instruction in basic literacy for native English speaking adults or conversational English to non-native English speaking adults.  You don’t need to know a foreign language to tutor a non-English speaking adult.

As an LVM tutor, you and your student arrange your own tutoring sessions at times and locations that are mutually convenient.  Most tutoring occurs in the local public library.

You need to have a high school diploma or equivalent, be patient, flexible and able to work with diverse groups of people.  There is a minimum 9 month commitment required.

To become an LVM volunteer tutor

·        Contact the most convenient LVM program location to register for a 2 hour volunteer orientation so you can learn more about the tutor training and expectations.  You will be expected to tutor at the location where you attend the orientation and training.

·        Successfully complete the 18 hour training in either Basic Literacy or ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages).  Trainings are intensive and include lecture, demonstrations, one-to-one practice sessions, group work, and homework.

College intern program

College interns from the College of the Holy Cross and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst have provided important program assistance to LVM affiliate programs for several years.

Either as full or part-time interns during the summer, they have helped with important fund development, special projects and administrative activities while learning what it is like to work in a nonprofit organization.

If you, your college or alumni organization is interested in participating in LVM’s program for college interns, either for the summer or during the academic year, please contact info@lvm.org.

Other volunteer opportunities

LVM volunteers also contribute valuable skills and time in ways other than tutoring.  For more information on what’s needed in your community, please contact the LVM location near you [link back to affiliate locations].
